About KS1 English
KS1 English Quizzes
Key Stage 1 English lays the groundwork for literacy by developing reading, writing, and spoken language skills in Years 1 and 2. The national curriculum places particular emphasis on phonics, word reading, comprehension, handwriting, composition, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. At the end of Year 1, pupils take the Phonics Screening Check, and at the end of Year 2, they sit the KS1 SATs in reading, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Reading and Phonics
Our KS1 English quizzes support the systematic teaching of phonics by reinforcing letter-sound correspondences from Phase 2 through Phase 6 of the Letters and Sounds programme. Word reading quizzes practise decoding regular words, recognising common exception words (tricky words that do not follow standard phonics rules), and reading words with common suffixes. Comprehension quizzes develop the ability to retrieve information from a text, make simple inferences, predict what might happen next, and identify the main ideas in a passage.
Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling
Grammar quizzes introduce the fundamental building blocks of English sentences. Pupils practise identifying and using nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, forming questions and statements, joining ideas with conjunctions such as and, but, because, and when, and using the correct tense. Punctuation quizzes cover capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas in lists, and apostrophes for contracted forms. Spelling quizzes target the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception word lists as well as spelling rules for adding prefixes and suffixes.
Supporting Early Writers
Strong writing begins with strong reading and secure grammatical knowledge. Our quizzes help children internalise sentence patterns and vocabulary that they can then apply in their own writing. Parents and teachers can use quiz results to identify specific areas where a child needs extra support, whether that is phonics decoding, punctuation accuracy, or sentence construction. Regular short sessions are far more effective than occasional long ones for building lasting literacy skills at this age.
