KS1 Science Quizzes

Key Stage 1 Science introduces pupils in Years 1 and 2 to the wonders of the natural world through observation, investigation, and hands-on experimentation. The national curriculum organises KS1 Science into four main areas: working scientifically, plants, animals including humans, everyday materials, and seasonal changes. The goal is to spark curiosity, develop scientific vocabulary, and teach children to ask questions and gather evidence to find answers.

Living Things: Plants and Animals

Our plant quizzes help children identify and name common wild and garden plants, describe the basic structure of flowering plants (roots, stem, leaves, flowers), and observe how plants grow and change over time. Animal quizzes cover the identification and classification of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, as well as understanding that animals and humans need water, food, and air to survive. Children also learn to identify and name basic body parts and explore the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.

Materials and Seasonal Changes

Everyday materials quizzes teach children to distinguish between an object and the material it is made from, identify and name common materials such as wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock, and describe their simple properties including hard, soft, stretchy, stiff, rough, smooth, shiny, and dull. Pupils also compare the suitability of different materials for particular purposes. Seasonal changes quizzes help children observe and describe weather patterns associated with the four seasons, track changes in day length throughout the year, and understand how seasonal changes affect the natural environment and daily life.

Working Scientifically

Across all topics, KS1 Science emphasises scientific skills. Our quizzes encourage children to ask simple questions, observe closely using simple equipment, perform simple tests, identify and classify, use observations and ideas to suggest answers, and gather and record data in simple ways. These foundational skills prepare pupils for the more structured investigations they will encounter in KS2 Science and beyond.
