About KS1 History

KS1 History Quizzes

Key Stage 1 History gives pupils in Years 1 and 2 their first structured encounter with the past. The national curriculum aims to develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time, and to help children understand where the people and events they study fit within a chronological framework. History at this stage is taught through stories, artefacts, pictures, and visits, making it engaging and accessible for young learners.

People and Events That Shaped Our World

Our KS1 History quizzes cover the core areas of the national curriculum. Changes within living memory quizzes help children compare aspects of life in different periods, such as toys, homes, schools, transport, and technology. Events beyond living memory quizzes explore nationally and globally significant occasions, including the Great Fire of London, the Gunpowder Plot, the first moon landing, and the sinking of the Titanic. Significant individuals quizzes introduce figures who have contributed to national and international achievements, such as Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole, Rosa Parks, Neil Armstrong, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and Queen Victoria.

Chronology and Historical Thinking

A key aim of KS1 History is to develop a sense of chronology. Our quizzes help children practise sequencing events in order, using vocabulary such as before, after, a long time ago, recently, past, and present. Questions encourage pupils to identify similarities and differences between ways of life in different periods and to understand that we can learn about the past from a range of sources including photographs, objects, buildings, paintings, and written accounts.

Making History Fun and Memorable

Young children learn best through stories and concrete examples. Our quizzes present historical facts in an accessible, question-and-answer format that reinforces what children learn in the classroom. Parents can use the quizzes at home as a springboard for further discussion, asking children why certain events were important or how life today differs from life in the past. Building historical knowledge and vocabulary early gives children a strong foundation for the more detailed study of history they will encounter at KS2 and beyond.
