Revising Identifications of Ions and gases with quizzes

(Exciting Ions and gases quizzes for students going in for the GCE, GCSE, and necta)

Hello guys and Welcome to gcequiz.com. Today, we will be discussing the identification of ions and gases. Here, you'll get to study the various methods of identification that are very common to chemists. Below are well-prepared revision quizzes of examination standards that will assist students in the revision of the topic. Before we proceed, let's have a recap of the concept:

An ion can be defined as a charged atom or molecule. It is due to the difference in the number of electrons and protons that results in ion formation. An ion can either acquire a positive charge ( hence, will be known as a cation) or a negative charge ( hence, will be known as an anion), which will depend on the number of protons and electrons in the atom. By convention, the charge of the electron is negative, and that for a proton, positive. The net charge of a neutral atom is zero because of the equal number of protons and electrons.

Gas is one of the four states of matter made up of widely spaced particles.

To test for ions, a well cleaned moistened flame test wire is immersed in a solid sample of the compound. After that, the wire is then put into the edge of a blue bunsen flame. The flame color produced  indicates which metal ion is available in the compound.

 Flame color       Ion present

Red                            Lithium, Li+

Orange                     Sodium, Na+

Lilac                          Potassium , K+

Brick red                 Calcium, Ca2+

During the exams, students are expected to theoretically and practically demonstrate their knowledge of this concept. This requires a mastery of at least the fundamentals. For more quizzes, click here.
