Revising Group I Alkali metals beginner with Quizzes

(Group I alkali metals beginner quiz for students doing the GCSE, GCE Advanced level and necta)

In chemistry, another name given to the group I elements is the Alkali metals and today we're going to be looking at all the elements found in this group, their physical properties and we will also look at the uses of some of the group I elements.

In science, a metal  is a component that promptly shapes positive particles (cations) and  has metallic bonds. Metals are some of the time portrayed as a grid of  positive particles encompassed by a haze of delocalized electrons.

There are six elements that make up Group I of the periodic table and they are (Li) lithium, (Na) sodium, (K) potassium, (Rb) rubidium, (Cs) cesium and (Fr) francium. The group I elements are called alkali metals because of their reaction with water to form alkalies which are capable of neutralizing acids. These elements are very reactive and are not found in nature but they are combined with other elements. We have as example, Sodium, Sodium is not found naturally as a single element but it is found combined with another element like Cl and in this case, we have sodium chloride (NaCl). They are not found naturally but they are very soluble and therefore be easily extracted and purified.

Physical properties

    Alkali metals are highly ductile

There are very good conductors of electricity and heat

    Have a low melting point

    They have a silverlike lustre

Uses of Some alkali metals

Sodium is industrially used as a heat transfer fluid

Potasium salts are used in the manufacture of fertilizers

Lithium is used in the manufacture of light batteries that are very good for vehicle propulsion
