Enzyme quizzes
( Enzyme quizzes with exam standards for the GCSE and GCE A level with different difficulties levels)
In this quiz, we will look critically at what enzymes are and how they function, and the various types. Note that, enzymes create most chemical reactions in the body. They help to actually speed up the rate of a chemical reaction which in turns help support life. The enzymes in our body help to perform very important tasks and each being extremely specific. These tasks include building muscle, destroying toxins, and breaking down food particles during digestion, this is to ease digestion and absorption as well.
An enzyme is any substance, protein in nature that acts as a catalyst in living organisms by regulating the rate at which chemical reactions proceed without itself being altered in the process. Almost all biological processes that occur within all living organisms are chemical reactions, most of which are regulated by enzymes.
There are 6 types of enzymes, which are namely;
-hydrolases,
-oxidoreductases,
- lyases,
-transferases,
-ligases and
-isomerases.
Functioning of an enzyme
Enzymes function by creating chemical reactions in the body. The enzymes actually speed up the rate of chemical reactions to help support life. The enzymes in your body help to perform very important tasks, some of which include building muscle, destroying toxins, and breaking down food particles during digestion.
Enzymes work by binding to reactant molecules to the active site of the substrate and and holding them in such a way that the chemical bond-breaking and bond-forming processes take place more readily and more rapidly.
