In this section, our topic of study is physical and chemical changes. We'll be describing the energy transfers accompanying both physical and chemical changes. Quizzes on this topic are made available below, but first of all, let's have a recap of our topic:
In chemistry, phase transitions are the physical processes dealing with the transition between solid, liquid, gaseous, and plasma states of matter. The enthalpy increases as the conversions are done from solid to liquid, to gas, and finally to plasma. Below is a summary of the various phase transitions:
Transition Process
Solid to liquid Melting
Liquid to solid Freezing
Solid to gas Sublimation
Gas to solid Deposition
Liquid to gas Evaporation
Gas to liquid Condensation
Gas to plasma Ionization
Plasma to gas Recombination
A chemical change usually occurs when a substance combines with another substance to form a new one. This process is also known as chemical synthesis. Also, it may involve the chemical decomposition into two or more substances. All these chemical processes together are called chemical reactions. A chemical reaction can be of two types: A reversible and an irreversible reaction. Furthermore, they could also be either exothermic (meaning they release heat into the environment) or endothermic (meaning they absorb heat from the environment). This section of chemistry is very important.
During the exams, students are expected to be able to describe and illustrate the energy transfer in the various physical and chemical changes. They are expected to master the concept well so as to get a good pass in questions asked on this topic. For more entertaining quizzes, click here.
