Revising Slope Processes and Mass Wasting with quizzes:
(Simple A level Slope Processes and Mass Wasting quizzes to assist students at the A level preparing for GCE, GCSE and necta.)
Hi. Welcome to Gce Quiz portal. We are here to test your knowledge using educational quizzes;
Mass movement processes are occurring continuously on all slopes; some act very slowly, others occur very suddenly, often with disastrous results. Any perceptible down-slope movement of rock or regolith is often referred to in general terms as a landslide. Landslides, however, can be classified in a much more detailed way that reflects the mechanisms responsible for the movement and the velocity at which the movement occurs. Hence;
Mass wasting, also known as slope movement or mass movement, is the geomorphic process by which soil, sand, regolith, and rock move downslope typically as a solid, continuous, or discontinuous mass, largely under the force of gravity, frequently with characteristics of a flow as in debris flows and mudflows.
All of these processes generally grade into one another, so the classification of such processes is somewhat difficult. We will use a classification that divides mass movement processes into two broad categories:
Slope Failures - a sudden failure of the slope resulting in the transport of debris downhill by sliding, rolling, falling, or slumping.
Sediment Flows - debris flows downhill mixed with water or air.
Mass wasting processes also occur on steep slopes in the ocean basins. A slope failure can occur due to over-accumulation of sediment on a slope or in a submarine canyon or could occur as a result of a shock like an earthquake.
3 types – of mass movements are common, based on the degree of disintegration of the material during movement:
During exams, students are evaluated via multiple-choice and/or short answer, and essay questions on slope processes and mass wasting. This is an important concept in Geography which must not be neglected. In this light, many practice quizzes are made available for a successful revision. Click here for more entertaining quizzes.
