What is key stage one?

Before we dive into the core of today’s topic, we must, first of all, understand what “key stage” is all about, some good background information that will help us better understand how to study at the key stage level using quizzes.

Key stages are levels or groups during a child’s primary education in England, Wales, and some other parts of the world, KS1 is the first stage of all the stages. These key stages do not only limit at KS1. We have KS2, KS3, KS4. KS1 falls under the stages in a child’s primary education and it is for a period of two years. That is, year 1 and year 2.

KS1 has a national curriculum which stipulates the functioning and expectations of this key stage.

Detail Explanation

Take note of the fact that KS1 is not absolutely the first level of children beginning primary education. KS1 or key stage one is just a step after a child’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). EYFS also considered as nursery level is for children within the age range of 3 – 5 years old.

I know you might be asking yourself; At what age then is KS1?. KS1 is for children within the range 5-7 years old.

Also take note of the fact that KS1 is not obligatory for all except state-owned academies or schools, even though many other schools have accepted and adopted it as a good system.

A major difference between key stages like KS1 and EYFS is the introduction of subject-basedthat learning at the key stages. Children at KS1 level start studying specific subjects. According to the national curriculum, there is a list of compulsory subjects every school using the key stages system must include and there are also optional subjects.

Compulsory subjects for ks1 according to the national curriculum: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Computing, Languages, PE, Art And Design, Music And Design Technology. Religious education is a subject with lessons on many religions which some parents may exclude their children from these lessons.

Optional subjects in KS1: Foreign languages, PSHE, citizenship.

The best way to study in KS1 is by taking the lessons in the above subjects seriously, doing all assignments, making sure the notes are read and understood the day they’re given.

After studying and understanding these subjects, consider answering some questions which will test your knowledge in that particular topic. You may want to use a question booklet or test your knowledge online through quizzes. Our collection of quizzes includes the various topics or lessons covered in the subjects.

These quizzes are specially prepared for you.

Key Stage One Exams

At the final year of key stage 1 or KS1, the children are tested via assessments or exams. This special exam is called the SATs exam. For KS1, the SATs exam consists of English and Maths test. The students are graded from a score ranging from 85 - 115, students with a score of 100 and above are considered up to standard while students with less are not.

The SATs exams from 2023 are not more compulsory, schools will decide if they will want to continue using them or not.
